#*&@#(~!)!@*%$&*$&!)@~^!!

Well, okay... so in a surprise move ABC announced that they're moving their most popular show, Grey's Anatomy, to compete against CBS' most popular show, CSI, and what ought to be NBC's most popular, show Studio 60.

This does not bode well for Sorkin's new drama. Although technically more watched, CSI was less of a threat because the same kind of people wouldn't have been watching both shows. The kind of people who like dramedic character-driven shows as opposed to dramatic procedurals are going to like S60 and Grey's, but they wouldn't have liked CSI.

All this will likely mean is that NBC will move S60. They have to. I have every bit of confidence in the world that it will be a better show than the other two (although Grey's is going to have the talented and lovely Ms. Debora Cahn next year) but lots of buzz or not, it's hard to fight against the two most popular dramas on TV. Whether it's home will be Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday now... or whether they will just move it to ER's new slot. Remains to be seen.

Comments:
Yeah, ABC is kind of a jerk now, but whatever. Thursday night at 9 wasn't a great place for the show to on at anyways. I'm holding out for Monday at 10.

And your blog title amuses me *grin*

The New York Times and the LA Times are both reporting that the reaction to Studio 60 and its cast at the upfronts could charitably be described as muted. I find this incredibly surprising given the anticipation surrounding the show.

I know, and I'm not concerned. They didn't see the episodes, they only saw the clips. No one's going to be bursting out guffawing at Sorkin's humor, it's not made up of one-liners and the ilk, it's long flowing conversations are where the hilarity comes in, and you can't really show that. If they showed the actual full episodes of all of them, the story would be much different.

I wouldn't generalize that people who will love S60 are not the same audience that CSI has. I love both shows. CSI isn't just a procedural drama, it's also very smart and character-driven - just like Aaron's shows. Anyway, I was upset that they were up against each other, and now with adding Grey's Anatomy... I just don't know what these guys are thinking.

I have a terrible feeling about this.. I would hate for this show to go the way of Sports Night... well written, but not a multi season show....

Sports Night and Studio 60 have two crucial difference between them. S60 has buzz and star power, Sports Night had neither. Critics loved it, but because Sorkin was unknown as a TV writer at the time there was no buzz... and their biggest stars were... Robert Guillaume and Josh Charles, who while both very talented aren't very crowd-drawing (at this time, remember no one knew who Felicity Huffman was) this show has Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet, Bradley Whitford and D.L. Hughley, all of whom are big name stars with their own fanbases and all of whom can get audiences. That'll make the big difference.

Plus, Sports Night failed because Sorkinese works better as a funny drama than a dramatic sitcom.

No Chris. You had me up til the last reasoning point on why Sports Night failed. Sorkin's stories and dialog worked just fine in a 30 minute format. ABC didn't know how to market the show - I don't think they accurately conveyed that it had NOTHING to do with sports. Being a single camera, 30 minute show also meant that it was too expensive to keep going if audiences weren't finding it. Sports Night needed time to grow, but our current TV market does not afford shows that time any longer. Remember, it took MASH at least two years to find an audience. People didn't get it at first, but they eventually did. I think they would have eventually gotten Sports Night, too. While I was furious at the time that ABC didn't support the show for longer, I realize that today a network will pull a show after airing only 1 episode. We were fortunate to get Sports Night for as long as we did.

Chris, I still think that the show needs to be moved. The ratings for CSI and GA are just too much against a brand new show. Later on, after S60 finds its audience, if NBC really wants to make that point and take on the big shows, they can. But, it first needs to find an audience.

I hope to god you are right that they will move it. THEY HAVE TO! I do not want it to die because it can not find an audience.

Look at the positive side. S60 has a GREAT lead in - "Earl" and "Office". With ER's rating on the decline, you don't want that for your lead in.

NBC would probably be throwing away a hit tv-show if they show it at this time. I'd imagine the audience for Grey's Anatomy would probably enjoy Studio 60 unlike CSI which is completely different - CSI revolves around the cases and not the characters unlike Sorkin's dramas. I don't think NBC was wrong to try and use S60 against a hit tv show but at least give it a season to establish an auidence before fronting it up against a hit show.

I don't think the problem is it being against a hit show, NBC was smart to do that. But two hit shows? That's taking it too far, let CSI and Grey's cut each other's audience in half, we need a new home for S60.

Just to ease the suffering of all of you wishing for Studio 60 to find a audience, here's a little present to all us fans.

I hadn't seen that before. I knew I missed Sorkin - I just didn't know I missed him that much...

IT LOOKS FABULOUS!!!!

Hey chris m., feel free to put the link to youtube on the blog main page, so that everyone go watch it, instead of just us "studio-60-over-the-top-go-to-every-existing-blog-about-the-show-and-read-all-the-comments-freaks"

I can actually see why people weren't that excited at the upfronts...I feel like that was pretty poorly packaged. I know they're trying to pump people up with the music and all, but I didn't think what they chose worked well. And of course there's the problem of trying to sell it with one-liners, which is never going to do the show justice.

In any case, I've read the pilot so I know it'll be amazing, but the preview isn't doing it for me.

I'd put the upfront trailer up, but it's already been removed, alas.

Oh, they've put it back!

And there is a Firefox extension that allows you to download it... If you use Firefox, just download the video Grab extension.
