RELATED NEWS: Rob Lowe headlines convoy of West Wing returnees

This isn't technically about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, but it certainly relates to Aaron Sorkin and a few future stars of Studio 60. After a more than three-year absence, Rob Lowe will return as Sam Seaborn in the final episodes of The West Wing. His return marks the culmination of years of rumors of a Sam-return and he's not coming alone. Joining him in their return to see the twilight of the show that made many of them household names are Emily Procter (Ainsley Hayes, not seen in four years), Mary-Louise Parker (Amy Gardner, not seen since since last year), Tim Matheson (John Hoynes, not seen since last year), Gary Cole (Bob Russell, not seen since last year) and Anna Deveare Smith (Nancy McNally, not seen since last year.)

Also coming back are Marlee Matlin as Joey Lucas, Annabeth Gish as Liz Bartlet Westin (likely to resolve the storyline started in Internal Displacement) and Timothy Busfield, soon to be Cal on Studio 60, but beloved by all as Danny Concannon. All three of these characters have been seen this season but without any real reason to suspect their return which is final now. Thoughts? Speculation? Do share.

Comments:
I'm sure with Liz's return we'll have some furthering with the whole Doug's cheating on her storyline, and you're probably right about the fact that others will come back. But keep in mind, some of these characters may well merely be coming back for Leo's funeral, I'm pretty sure that's why Amy's coming back.

Joe Quincy would be nice, I mean, Oliver would be too, but we have seen him twice this season, so it's not like it's "Man! Whatever happened to Babish?"

I wish LJM was coming back too. There are so many things to love about the first few seasons of this show. Okay, everything is something to love. heh. But LJM and Leo were priceless. I could see him coming back to Leo's funeral and saying something that would make me alternatively laugh and cry. Of course it would help if Aaron was writing it. Same with Ainsley - I'm a litte nervous she won't be speaking in iambic verse. hee.

Oh! Lord Marbury! He's one of my favorites; so completely over the top which is exactly why he works. Although, they might have hit the point now, where Marbury can't top himself anymore. He's done so many outrageous things that no matter what we imagine, it either wouldn't be in his character, or it wouldn't be funny.

How about someone we've only seen once? I thought Lionel Tribbey was hilarious. Come on, someone who carries a cricket bat around? A-mazing.

I'm really excited to see Ainsley and Sam again, though. Most of the others I could do without, but, like Hungry Hippo said, they had good chemistry.

I'd say Annabeth Gish was a supporting character on the X-Files. I mean, the leads are obviously Gillian Anderson and David Duchovany. She might be more famous than Smith or Moss though.

Anyways, I have no need to see some of these characters again (Lord John Marbury, Joe, Ron, Cliff, Stanley) I mean, many of these are great characters (although some: LJM and Cliff, I'm less a fan of). But what would be the point of them showing up. Just to go "Hey! Remember me? Isn't it cool how I'm back after all this time." It would just make the funeral seem more cluttered, like the last episode of Seinfeld where they had all these characters back that they barely did a thing with.

Leo's funeral should include a few minor characters just to acknowledge that the minor ones cared about Leo too, but it should mainly be a time of mourning for Jed and Josh and everyone else (and also Mallory, seriously, Mallory better show.)

The truth is, Leo was such a great character and had so many great relationships, that I imagine they could bring back nearly anyone. Especially the guys coming back. Sam worshipped Leo, as seen in the first season. Leo helped out Ainsley for the first few weeks she was there. Mallory is an obvious one. Amy and Leo didn't have much together, but I can imagine definite respect.

Also, what a great tribute to the show that Sorkin built to bring everyone together for the end of a great season.

I just couldn't disagree more. Again, it would be as lame and cheesey as the last episode of Seinfeld bringing all these characters back for no other reason than for you to think "Hey! Remember them?" The final episodes are to finish a story, and I don't think tons and tons of cameos is the right way to finish it. Remembering those past characters ought to be what the retrospective is for.

Yeah, but in real life, these characters would all be likely to come to Leo's funeral. (Yes, I know, it's just a TV show... but at the same time, it so isn't.)

Right. That doesn't change the fact that we don't need to talk to them. I mean, if it's just a shot of mourners at Leo's funeral, and it includes all these people, I guess that's okay. But I don't need time in the episode devoted to how sad these people are about Leo's death. It's redundant in a less powerful way and makes for bad television.

But we can all agree that Pluie the Wolf's cameo is essential, right?

I think it's gonna have to be Bonnie the Grizzly Bear. Pluie is regretably the series' first casualty.

Oops, Second. Morris Tolliver.
