January 8th or January 22nd?

Hey everyone, hope you had a happy New Year!

So there's a bit of confusion on when Studio 60 is returning. NBC.com as well as a few other sources have it's return down for January 8th (i.e. next Monday) whereas TV Guide and, really, all schedules seem to have a Heroes rerun down instead. I don't honestly know the answer any better than anyone else so I just wanted to say this:

Regardless of what any schedule is telling you, turn on NBC at 10/9 central and just check to see if it's on, 'cause it could very well be and if it is, you don't want to miss it. We also don't want the first ratings after the hiatus to be drastically down because even the hardcore fans didn't see it 'cause they thought it wasn't on.

Comments:
Eonline says 1/8 for the next new episode.

Right, as I said, different sources are providing different information. E! Online is one of the ones saying 1/8, but there are just as many saying 1/22.

My DirecTV onscreen guide says Heroes is running two hours next week. I have the DVR set to keep all S60 broadcasts, new or repeats. Why isn't Bravo rerunning it like they did WEST WING? This would be a perfect fit for Bravo and a way to increase ratings.

I'm pretty sure that the network knows far better than TVguide which programs they will be airing at which times.

My TiVo says it's a Heroes rerun but my TiVo is known to be wrong occassionally, and I'm not taking any chances, so I'm taping it anyway. My instinct is to trust NBC.com but that's not always wise either, so we'll just have to hope!

Yeah, my Comcast DVR says Heroes as well, but luckily I record Heroes anyway. . .

My monthly cable guide magazine has Heros on 1/8, the Golden Globe Awards on 1/15 (why on a Monday -- aren't most awards shows on Sunday nights -- sigh), then Studio returning on 1/22. If that's the case, my tapes of the season so far are in for an extra workout!

NBC.COM says the show returns on 1/8/07...Epsidode: "The Return"

Right, it does. Which I already said in the post :D

It now says on NBC.COM that Studio 60 will resume on January 22nd. The waiting continues....

Yup, looks as if we finally have our answer.

Actually, I don't mind waiting, because my cable isn't working properly and is skipping every third line or so, and it won't be fixed until mid-next-week at the earliest. So I'd hate to miss out on all the good stuff in the episode because my cable box is on the fritz! In the meantime, I'll be watching all the eps again on my TiVo, which is, as always, working just fine.

Sorry that all of you have to wait, but... it is a lucky break for me, so I'm not that sorry. LOL

CTV in Canada, where we get to watch the show a day earlier than you do in the U.S. (hee hee), doesn't have the show listed for Jan. 7th.

TV.com is still showing "The Return" as airing on Jan. 8th, but I'd go with what NBC is saying, too.

While I'm at it - are you able to get the day-after streaming video of Studio 60 from CTV.ca or is it geo-gated for people in the U.S.?

Just curious.

Does anyone else agree that NBC is doing this show and its fans a HUGE disservice by keeping it totally off the air for so long?

Six weeks is enough time for the public to think the show is history already. How can they hope to regain any momentum after hiding it for six weeks? Or do they even care anymore? It's as if they've already decided to just run it off until Spring and forget about it. (No RERUNS???) That does not indicate confidence.

I've already said that S60 is such a perfect fit for Bravo that it's amazing is hasn't been regularly rerunning there as West Wing did through most of its network run. If NBC were reallly serious about the show, they should be rerunning all 12 current episodes in regular rotation on Bravo right now, with some promotion for it on NBC. That would allow new viewers to FIND S60 and catch up on what NBC could promote as "one of the most acclaimed new series of the season." They could quote the best reviews and fan response, and invite viewers to "see what all the talk is about."

You gain and build an audience by EXPOSURE and promotion, not by hiding a show for six weeks, as if it were an embarrassment. I'm afraid they've already given up on Studio 60. I hope I'm wrong, but what NBC is doing with it now is unforgivable.

What do the rest of you think?

I actually think this is NBC trying to do a good thing here. I think they want to try and build some momentum coming into February sweeps and following the buzz from the Christmas show. If they had aired a new ep on 1/8, they would have followed it with a week off due to the Golden Globes running on NBC on the 15th. This way, they come back on the 22nd and stay on without a break for a long time. I hate the wait as much as anyone, but this time, it seems like a reasonable choice.

Also, Bravo didn't start airing West Wing reruns until the 3rd season, and they stayed a season or two behind for most of the run. I would imagine that NBC doesn't want to dilute the ratings anymore than they already are from Tivo and iTunes. If a bunch of the current viewers started watching it on Bravo instead, that could be the final nail in the coffin for S60.

Hey.

Sorry to get in touch this way, but I couldn't find an email address. I'm currently setting up a UK fan website for when Studio 60 launches over here, and I'm starting to compile the links pages. I was wondering if you'd be interesting in doing a link exchange, I saw you'd linked to a few sites on the site, but I'm not sure how selective you are!

The website is at http://www.sunset-studio.co.uk and my email is admin@sunset-studio.co.uk. Please feel free to delete this post once you've read it :)

it will air starting 1/22 confirmed by NBC commercial after Golden Globes

I don't see any advantage whatsoever in NBC keeping it off the air for six weeks.

However if you'll chack your program guides, you'll see that on Sunday and Monday 1/21 - 22, Bravo is finally rerunning most of the previous episodes from Pilot to Christmas, 7 in all. Wonder why they didn't like the other 3?

This is unfortunately not a regular thing, the shows are not on the Bravo schedule after that - I checcked through the 31st. Interestingly they have a West Wing repeat in there somewhere.

Can someone please explein to me why they think reruns on Bravo would dilute the show's ratings and be "the final nail..." Seems to me that everytime someone watches, DVRs, or downloads an episode, (which someone gets money for) no matter where it is, it should count in favor of the show. How could it not?

Anyway, I paid 8 bucks to download four episodes from itunes, only to find they can't be watched on a TV!

So this Sunday and every Monday beyond, I'll be filling up my DVR with must-keep episodes of S60, until I can buy the first season on DVD.

Networks have two basic ways of getting shows to air. They fully own and produce some themselves, but not many. Most of their shows are created by independent production companies - in Studio 60's case, Warner Brothers. They pay a $3 million dollar fee per episode to WBros, which then has to produce the show and pay all of the expenses from that money. Warner Bros. owns the show, and will be able to make money off of DVD sales if and when that happens.

The network airs the shows and sells the ad time to make back their money. Ratings = viewers which = higher ad rates. If the show is getting low ratings, NBC can't make enough money from the ad revenue to cover their costs,so they cancel it. DVR viewers aren't counted by Neilson ratings, because it is assumed that those viewers are skipping the ads, and the advertisers won't pay more $ just to have their ads skipped.

iTunes sales are too new and too small a segment to have much bearing on the revenues, plus, only part of the money goes to NBC, the rest is the fee to Apple. If 25,000 people download an episode from iTunes, that is less than $50,000 total revenue. That isn't even close to the cost of one :30 ad.

So no, all methods of viewing aren't equal for NBC. I imagine that they are running the eps on Bravo in the hopes that people will watch them and 'catch-up' and keep watching the new shows. Ad revenues on Bravo are much lower than on the networks. We are actually lucky that the show is on NBC. If it were on CBS, it probably would have been canceled after the first 6 had aired. NBC is willing to give it some time to find an audience, because they badly need some fresh successes.

As far as the six week delay, shows have always gone into reruns during Christmas. Yes, they could have brought it back for one week, and then had another week off for the Globes, but I still say that would have been stupid, especially since the next three are actually the parts of one episode. They are bringing it back on the same night as Heroes, which is their breakout hit. And they have been promoting the hell out of it on NBC all week; I have seen at least 5 promos in high profile spots.

NBC isn't the problem, the problem is that there aren't enough people watching the show.
